Williamsport’s original 1947 terminal had substantial deficiencies and no longer served current or future aviation related services. The airport sits on 900 acres, has two intersecting runways, full length taxiways and is a full service Fixed base Operator (FBO). A state- of- the- art terminal replaced the original structure that served the community without interrupting its service to the community. The new terminal was sited to the east, between the tower and a hanger. The original terminal was demolished and its site was transformed into an additional passenger parking lot.
The new facility’s design had to offer more flights, attract additional airlines and efficiently process increased passenger traffic through the building. Meeting FAA, Penn DOT’s Bureau of Aviation, National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) and Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements were also critical for this project.
The new terminal is a very contemporary and energy efficient building that is designed to accommodate a second carrier. The 29,537 gsf facility provides modern conveniences such as a passenger loading bridge for efficient circulation, updated passenger processing and security systems, a passenger baggage carousel, seating for 180 passengers in the Transportations Safety Administration’s “Secure Waiting Area” for outbound passengers and comfort facilities. Tenant spaces were incorporated which included a full- service travel agency, a car rental service, a café and ample parking adjacent to the new terminal. The community has access to the airports large multipurpose room designed to be used as conference or classroom space, seating 45. It is supported by a small kitchenette and restrooms. The remaining administrative wing houses staff offices, storage, and a ready- room for emergency personnel.
